Why was my card declined on Claude?
Most Claude payment failures are not Anthropic rejecting you — they are your bank refusing an international online charge, or your country not being supported for card billing. The error is usually generic, so the first job is working out which of the two it is.
What actually happens at Anthropic's checkout
Claude subscriptions are billed by a card processor, not by Anthropic directly, and the decline you see is normally passed straight through from your issuing bank. That means the message on screen tells you almost nothing — the useful information is sitting in your banking app or with your bank's support line.
Anthropic also restricts which countries it can bill in. If Claude is not available for paid subscription where your card was issued, no card will work no matter how much balance it has, and no amount of retrying changes it.
A third case, commonly reported across AI tools generally: some prepaid and virtual card BINs are refused by subscription checkouts even when the card is funded. That is a processor-level rule, not a judgement about you.
Try these first — they cost nothing
- Check whether international online payments are enabled on your card. Many banks outside North America and Europe disable this by default, and it is often a toggle in the mobile app. Ask your bank the precise question: "is international online e-commerce enabled on this card?" — "does my card work abroad?" often gets a yes that only covers ATM withdrawals.
- Confirm the billing address you typed matches the address your bank has on file, exactly. A mismatch is a common silent decline.
- If you have a second card from a different bank, try it once. If both fail identically, the problem is upstream of your bank.
- Check whether paid Claude is available for billing in your country at all before assuming the card is at fault.
A gift subscription is applied by you, not by us
Anthropic supports gift subscriptions, which is the cleanest possible route: the term is bought at list price and you redeem the link yourself while signed in to your own account. Nobody ever needs your password, and the subscription lives on the account you already use.
Stacking onto an existing subscription
If you already pay for Claude Pro with a card that is now failing, a gift term generally stacks and begins when the current period ends. Cancel the card-based subscription first if you want billing to stop rather than resume.
What works when the card cannot be fixed
If none of the free fixes apply, the working route is to stop paying with a card at all: buy a gift code or prepaid voucher with crypto, and redeem it on your own account.
We buy the code by hand after your crypto payment confirms and email it to you, normally in under 30 minutes and always within 12 hours. Our service fee is printed as a line item before you pay, and an undelivered or invalid code is refunded in full in the coin you paid.
New here? We have no reviews yet and will not invent any — that page has the checklist we would judge a shop like ours by.
