Why was my card declined on ChatGPT?
ChatGPT Plus declines cluster around three causes: your bank blocking international online charges, an unsupported billing country, and prepaid or virtual cards being refused at the processor. OpenAI's error message does not distinguish between them, which is why people retry pointlessly.
Why OpenAI's checkout is stricter than most
Subscription checkouts that see high fraud volumes tend to tighten their rules on card types, and AI tools have been a heavy target. The widely reported consequence is that prepaid cards, virtual cards and some fintech-issued BINs get refused on ChatGPT Plus even when they are perfectly funded.
OpenAI also bills only in supported countries. If your card was issued somewhere that is not on that list, the charge fails at the country check before your balance is ever considered.
Because Plus is a recurring subscription rather than a one-off purchase, it is also more exposed to your bank's limits: a card that handles a single $20 purchase fine can still fail on a repeating international charge.
Try these first — they cost nothing
- Enable international online transactions on your card in your banking app, or by asking your bank in exactly those words.
- Try a card from a mainstream bank rather than a fintech or prepaid product — those are the ones most often refused here.
- Make sure the billing address matches your bank's records precisely, including postcode.
- Check that your country is supported for ChatGPT Plus billing before concluding the card is the problem.
There is no official gift subscription
Unlike some vendors, OpenAI does not offer a gift-subscription product. That means the honest route is a prepaid voucher you enter on OpenAI's own checkout — you keep your account, you do the entering, and we never touch your login. It also means the voucher has to be one their checkout accepts, which is exactly what we test before listing the SKU.
Plus and API billing are separate systems
A voucher that covers the consumer ChatGPT subscription does not necessarily cover API usage, which is billed differently. If the API is what you actually need, ask before ordering rather than after.
What works when the card cannot be fixed
If none of the free fixes apply, the working route is to stop paying with a card at all: buy a gift code or prepaid voucher with crypto, and redeem it on your own account.
We buy the code by hand after your crypto payment confirms and email it to you, normally in under 30 minutes and always within 12 hours. Our service fee is printed as a line item before you pay, and an undelivered or invalid code is refunded in full in the coin you paid.
New here? We have no reviews yet and will not invent any — that page has the checklist we would judge a shop like ours by.
