Why was my card declined on Amazon?
Amazon declines split into two very different problems: your bank refusing an international charge, and Amazon's own address verification failing because the billing address you typed does not match your bank's records. The second is far more common than people expect, and it is free to fix.
Address verification is the one people miss
Amazon checks the billing address you enter against the address your card issuer holds. If they differ — a missing apartment number, an old address, a different spelling — the charge can be refused even though the card is perfectly good and funded. This produces a decline that feels inexplicable because nothing is wrong with the money.
The second cause is the familiar one: many cards outside North America and Europe are not enabled for international online purchases, or are domestic-scheme cards that never leave the local network regardless of the logo printed on them.
There is also a structural point unique to Amazon: each storefront is effectively a separate shop. An account and a balance on amazon.com are not the same as amazon.co.uk or amazon.de, which matters enormously if you decide to use a gift card.
Try these first — they cost nothing
- Re-enter your billing address exactly as your bank holds it, including any apartment or unit number and the correct postcode. This is the single most common free fix.
- Enable international online payments on the card with your bank.
- Remove and re-add the card in Amazon's payment settings rather than editing it — stale stored details cause repeat failures.
- Check whether your card is a domestic-only scheme card. If it is, no configuration will make it work internationally.
Gift card balance is storefront-specific
An amazon.com claim code only works on amazon.com. It will not redeem on amazon.de, amazon.co.uk or amazon.ae, and there is no way to transfer balance between storefronts. Buy the card matching the site you actually shop on — this is the single largest source of refund requests in this business, which is why we ask you to acknowledge it before paying.
Balance covers most things, not everything
Gift card balance covers most purchases including Prime in many cases, but Amazon controls that and it varies by storefront and product. Check at their checkout before relying on it for a specific purchase.
What works when the card cannot be fixed
If none of the free fixes apply, the working route is to stop paying with a card at all: buy a gift code or prepaid voucher with crypto, and redeem it on your own account.
We buy the code by hand after your crypto payment confirms and email it to you, normally in under 30 minutes and always within 12 hours. Our service fee is printed as a line item before you pay, and an undelivered or invalid code is refunded in full in the coin you paid.
New here? We have no reviews yet and will not invent any — that page has the checklist we would judge a shop like ours by.
